Renowned professor of gynaecology and obstetrics and former Vice chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Adewole Folorunsho was today named as Nigerias minister of health as President Muhammadu Buhari swore in his 36 ministers and junior ministers in Abuja.
The President also named a surgeon, Dr. Osagie E. Ehanire who hails from Edo State as Minister of state for the ministry.
Other ministers include: Kemi Adeosun (Finance), Rotimi Amaechi (Transportation), Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment), Kayode Fayemi (Solid Minerals), Babatunde Fashola (Power, Works and Housing), Abdulrahman Dambazau (Interior), Aisha Alhassan (Women Affairs), Ogbonnaya Onu (Science and Technology), Abubakar Malami (Justice), Hadi Sirika (State for Aviation), Suleiman Adamu (Water Resources), Solomon Dalong (Youths and Sports), Ibeh Kachikwu (State for Petroleum) and Audu Ogbeh (Agriculture).
Also sworn in were: Udo Udo Udoma (Budget and National Planning), Lai Mohammed (Information), Amina Mohammed (Environment), Ibrahim Usman Jibril (State for Environment), Anthony Onwuka (State for Education), Muhammadu Bello (FCT), Adamu Adamu (Education), Okechukwu Enelamah (Industry, Trade and Investment), Aisha Abubakar (State for Trade, Industry and Investment), Khadija Bukar Abba (State for Foreign Affairs), Claudius Daramola (State for Niger Delta), Geoffrey Onyeama (Foreign Affairs) Monsur Dan-Ali (Defence) and James Ocholi (State for Labour).
Others include Zainab Ahmed (State for Budget and National Planning), Mustapha Shehuri (State for Power), Heineken Lokpobiri (State for Agriculture), Usani Usani Uguru (Niger Delta) Abubakar Bwari Bawa (State for Solid Minerals), Adebayo Shittu (Communications) and President Muhammadu Buhari who kept the Petroleum ministry to himself. Prof. Adewole, 61, the new health minister completed his tenure as the 11th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan early this month. Prior to his appointment as VC, he served as Provost, College of Medicine, UI, the largest and oldest Medical school in the country.
His research interest is in the area of Human Papillomavirus, HIV and Gynaecologic oncology, a specialised field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer and vulva cancer. In recognition of his outstanding research and experience in the area of cancer, he was appointed to serve as member of the International advisory board of Africa Cancer Institute, a comprehensive cancer centre in sub-Saharan black Africa.
The new Minister of State, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, is a Fellow of the West African college of Surgeon. He was a senior registrar at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and also worked as the Divisional Consultant Surgeon, Shell Petroleum Development Company Hospital.
